Fixture Difficulty Ratings: What They Do (and Don't) Tell You

Every fixture in FPL carries a difficulty rating from 1 (easiest) to 5 (hardest), shown separately for the home and away side of the same match. It's the single most-used signal for planning transfers a few gameweeks out — and also one of the most misunderstood.

What it actually is

The rating is a single number per team, per fixture, derived from each club's overall strength plus separate attack and defence strength splits for home and away matches. That's why a "difficulty 2" away fixture for one team can sit next to a "difficulty 4" home fixture for their opponent in the same match — the rating is asymmetric by design, not a typo.

Where it's genuinely useful

• Spotting a run of fixtures: three or four matches in a row rated 1-2 is a good signal to target that team's attackers, or bring in their defenders for clean-sheet potential.
• Comparing captain options: all else equal, the player facing the easier fixture is the safer pick.
• Planning chip timing: Bench Boost and Triple Captain both benefit from being aligned with a team's easiest stretch of fixtures.

Where it misleads

• It doesn't know about form. A team on a genuine hot streak beating a "good" fixture rating happens constantly — the rating is set well before kickoff and doesn't update on the week's form.
• It doesn't know about injuries or rotation. A "difficulty 2" fixture means little if the player in question isn't actually going to start.
• It's a team-level number applied to individual players. A rock-solid defence facing a "difficulty 2" attack still concedes sometimes; the rating describes a tendency, not a guarantee.
• Newly promoted or wildly inconsistent teams are the hardest to rate accurately, since the underlying strength numbers have less of a track record to work from.

How to actually use it
